Bone Density / DEXA
Maximising bone density in early and middle life helps to reduce the risk of osteoporosis
Overview
The most common situation when a dexa bone density scan is considered necessary is when there is concern regarding a condition called osteoporosis. As we grow older our bones lose mass making them more likely to fracture.
What to expect
Before
Referrals are not required to book an appointment for this scan.
No specific preparation is required, but if you are on any medications, please bring a list of your medications with you.
During
The examination is performed by a radiographer and will take no more than 30 minutes. It is completely painless.
You will be provided with a gown to change into and will be positioned on the scan bed by the radiographer. The scanner has an ‘arm’ which will pass over the top of you, measuring the density of the bones in your spine and hip. A computer report is then generated which details your bone density, known as your T-score. Feel free to ask your radiographer if you have any questions.
After
After the examination, you are able to resume normal activities. The bone density specialist will issue the report to you and your doctor.
